Danish kids’ wear brand UBANG is a tribute to free and unrestrained play because clothes are about more than just keeping warm!
We're adults for most of our lives, but children for only a few years – which is why they should be cherished. This is the philosophy Ulla Bang Jørgensen taps into as her driving force when creating a new collection. The designer brings to life a world of weird and wonderful creatures on T-shirts, long-sleeved tops, dresses and, not least, socks for children ages 0-10. In the universe of the experienced kids’ wear designer, clothes are not only for keeping warm. Long-sleeved tops featuring appliqué animals naturally encourage play and movement. For example a sleeve comes alive as an elephant’s trunk when the child raises her arm and the faces on socks are animated by wiggling toes, making dressing in the morning so much more fun.
Since 2006 when the first collection came out, the designer's special eye for integrating children's playfulness and roleplaying in her designs has changed how everyone - regardless of age - views modern kids’ wear. From the outset, the mission has not only been to create kids’ wear that is functional and keeps its shape and colour, but also to revolutionise how we view children's clothes. Her inspiration? It comes from the wearers of her products, of course!
"Children's play is a great source of inspiration to me, and I get a lot out of observing them as they create stories together that develop and constantly take new and imaginative twists and turns. That's why in my designs the story is never over. That's part of the fun of making up your own story with the help of, say, a glove puppet in your pocket or an animal on your sleeve, which comes to life when you move your arm," explains the designer.
UBANG babblechat is founded and own by Ulla Bang Jørgensen. She graduated as set designer from Wimbledon School of Art in 1996.
